The introduction of the Italian language test will be mainly to those who are willing to request for the CARTA DI SOGGIORNO (Stay Permit for stay long period), a document that can be renewed after every five years stay in Italy.
This statement is in the Security Law of 2009. The Italian Language test will come into effect on December 9th 2010. To support this law, the Minister of Home Affairs made it clear that, one will be required to book online from the following website www.testitaliano.interno.it (it is useless to try now as it is not activated). From the same webpage it is possible to consult given date, hour and place in which the appointment is made for the examination and then for the result.
The procedure will be managed by the prefecture, but the examinations will be done at the permanent territorial centers, such as public schools that already organize courses for adults and immigrants. It will also be necessary to demonstrate that one has an Italian knowledge of "level A2", European standard that indicates how one masters an elementary level of a language. This is not difficult to verify in who is in Italy currently for at least five years.
This is an additional obstacle that will extend also the time to obtain the CARTA DI SOGGIORNO (card of stay) that can require from sixty days between the reservation and the time to take Italian test.
